Qatar Airways is planning to cut about a fifth of its workforce

The airline¡¯s chief executive, Akbar Al Baker, told the BBC
in an interview that making the decision to reduce its staffing numbers ¡°is
really painful, but we have no other alternative¡±.
Qatar Airways employees more than 46,000 staff, with up to
9,200 jobs at risk. The cuts are part of a restructuring plan that will also
see the airline retire around 50 aircraft over the next three years.
Al Baker also said Qatar Airways will provide support to
other airlines and groups in which it has an equity stake, including Cathay
Pacific, International Airlines Group and LATAM, but only if required to
protect its investment.?
